Research Shows Yoga Can Help Treat Tinnitus

In 2019, researchers in Poland conducted a study to determine the effects of yoga on 25 patients diagnosed with chronic tinnitus. These patients participated in daily yoga exercises for 12 weeks, and 10 of the participants received MRI scans before and after each yoga session to measure the effect of the yoga on brain health and the severity of their tinnitus. At the end of the 12-week period, the researchers determined that the participants had better control of their tinnitus symptoms, less intrusiveness of symptoms, slept better, and felt they had an enhanced quality of life.

How Yoga Can Be Used to Treat Tinnitus

Tinnitus can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions, from poor cardiovascular health and poor circulation to trauma or injury to the head or ear. Certain yoga poses can improve tinnitus symptoms and provide temporary or even permanent relief. Yoga improves circulation, cardiovascular function, lowers blood pressure, improves flexibility and mobility, improves focus, reduces stress and inflammation, and increases your heart rate. All of these benefits have the possibility to improve certain health conditions, including tinnitus.

The Best Yoga Positions for Treating Tinnitus

The following yoga poses can be used as an effective method of tinnitus treatment:

  • Trikonasana (triangle pose)
  • Padangusthasana (hand to big toe pose)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog)
  • Ustrasana (camel pose)
  • Gomukhasana (cow face pose)
  • Bhujangasana (cobra pose)
  • Viparita Karani (legs up the wall)
  • Matsyasana (fish pose)

All of these yoga poses offer the health benefits mentioned above, and also provide a relaxing distraction from tinnitus symptoms. Meditative yoga can also help you manage the discomfort and balance issues associated with tinnitus.

Combining Yoga with Other Tinnitus Treatment Options

Your physician or hearing specialist may recommend that you combine yoga with other treatment options for the best results. Yoga for tinnitus can be combined with other strategic tinnitus treatments such as sound support, Zen therapy treatments, white noise therapy, hearing aids, and more. Ultimately, you and your hearing specialist can discuss which tinnitus treatment is best for your symptoms, lifestyle, and needs.
